How to avoid a riot while embedding highly segregated waste collections image #1

Presentation from 18th EAUC Annual Conference 2014

Stream: Estates and Operations
Competancy level: More advanced

Description:

Background: The University of Strathclyde have developed a highly segregated system for collecting food waste, paper, plastic packaging, metals and foils, and glass, which has been rolled out at room level alongside the phasing out of desk side containers. We have diverted 100% of our waste from landfill and achieved a recycling rate of 85%.

A key to success has been the strategic engagement of Department Heads and the participation of student waste auditors.

Aim: To offer delegates a 'strategic template' for delivering a successful pervasive source segregated waste collection system.

Key themes:
• Engaging Heads of Departments
• Student and staff engagement
• Infrastructure: costs and lessons learned
• Student led contamination and content audits
• Contractor data: the power of good reporting

Delegate Deliverables:
• A takeaway 'strategic template'
• Practical information on e.g.segregated waste planning. costs, timescales, pitfalls.

Speakers:

Dean Drobot, Energy and Environment Manager, University of Strathclyde and Catalina Silva Plata, Environmental Intern, University of Strathclyde
