Cup of tea and an SDG 2020 - Goal 4 - Quality Education

22nd Sep 2020 10:00 – 10:20

Following on from last year's successful Cup of tea and an SDG series, timed to celebrate Global Goals Week, we are again bringing you some brilliant SDG initiatives from the Higher and Further Education sector. These aim to inspire you to take action in your own institution.

This session will focus on SDG 4 - Quality Education.

We will hear about the new ESD Guidance from Professor James Longhurst, Assistant Vice Chancellor at University of the West of England and from Alba Saenz de Villaverde, University of Edinburgh - one of the students that produced the UNESCO Futures of Education

Education for Sustainable Development - Guidance for Higher Education Providers

The guidance was first published in 2014 by HEA and QAA.  In early 2020 an expert group, commissioned by Advance HE and QAA,  began reviewing and updating the guidance. Consultation on a draft  is scheduled to take place in November and December with publication expected in February 2021. The new guidance will provide a range of advice and guidance for positioning sustainability into the HE curriculum of any discipline.  It will act as a reference point for the next iteration of the QAA Benchmark Statements.

The guidance will

  • Identify who in institutions should lead and engage with the aims and intentions of the guidance.
  • Address the question of why education for sustainable development is critical to teaching and learning.
  • Provide examples of how to embed ESD in disciplines.
  • Provide examples of what approaches will be suitable in different contexts.
  • Provide a range of resources to support educators.
