Cutting cost and carbon emissions – CHP in Universities – Free Seminar

5th October 2012, 09:30-16:30, SOAS University of London, Russell Square, London , WC1H 0XG.

UK universities and colleges spend over £200 million a year on energy, most university’s energy bills are well over £1 million a year so any reduction means significantly more money for core educational objectives.
The ability to provide efficient, low-carbon heat, cooling and electricity is of increasing importance in a world of rising energy costs.
Generating your own energy through Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce energy bills and carbon emissions.

This free seminar for university and higher education energy managers will discuss the benefits and practicalities involved in CHP, district heating and trigeneration technologies. The opportunity for using Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) to provide guaranteed savings with little or no capital expenditure will also be examined, as well as a variety of other funding options.

The event will:

• Give a brief overview of CHP, district heating and trigeneration technology
• Examine case studies for CHP at a range of scales, using a variety of fuels
• Explore financial incentives and policy drivers
• Feature a tour of the SOAS boiler room and CHP plant.
• Include networking opportunities and a chance to ask the experts

Speakers include:

• Stephen Rippon, Lead, Heat Policy, Department of Energy and Climate Change
• Stephen McKinnell, Head of Energy Management Bloomsbury Heat and Power Consortium.
• Joel Cardinal, Energy Manager, University of Warwick.
