Educating global citizens: Green Academy as a vehicle for students and staff partnerships for education for sustainable development

This event is being hosted as part of the Higher Education Academy's Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014.

Information about the event

The HEA/NUS research on student attitudes to sustainability provides an excellent body of evidence that students believe sustainability should be covered by their university. This day of workshops will build on this by providing students with the opportunity to shape their own teaching and learning experience.

The event will bring together national experts, students and staff with an interest in exploring sustainable development in the curriculum. The event will begin with a national perspective on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and with an introduction to how sustainability is being embedded within the curriculum in Southampton. The focus of the day however is to provide a platform for students and staff to work together to shape the embedding of ESD within the teaching and learning of topic areas not traditionally associated with ESD, as well as exploring the use of technology, the campus as a living lab, and extra-curricular learning. This will include exploring curriculum design and learning materials, enhancing student employability and graduate capabilities, potential open educational resources.

This platform for HE community to feed back and shape ESD within their discipline will result in a series of subject-specific case studies to share with the wider community.

Aims/outcomes

• To foster and develop student-staff and cross-sector partnerships to shape ESD in the curriculum

• To empower students to shape their curriculum, enhancing their capabilities to contribute to sustainable and just societies
