Effective and Energy Efficient Cold Storage

31st Aug 2011 14:42

University laboratories, particularly bioscience labs, contain many cold storage devices including fridges, freezers, and liquid nitrogen dewars. These can directly account for up to 5% of total laboratory energy consumption, and often create indirect consumption because their heat generation requires more cooling of ventilation air.

This free workshop highlights good practice examples, and will discuss topics such as:
• How centrally funded initiatives to replace old -80 freezers with new low energy models can meet five year payback criteria;
• How researchers can be persuaded to dispose of unwanted samples;
• The value of centralised sample tracking using software and bar code scanners;
How to set up and maintain strategic cold storage initiatives; and
• Emerging approaches such as ambient temperature DNA storage
