Enterprise lecture to investigate radical climate change solutions
Enterprise lecture to investigate radical climate change solutions
18th Sep 2013 19:00 – 21:00
Controversial proposals to tackle climate change, from putting mirrors in space to scrubbing carbon dioxide from the air, are to be discussed at an Enterprise Lecture hosted by the University of Winchester on 18 September 2013.
In Engineering the climate: is it the answer?, Professor John Shepherd CBE FRS will present the findings of the UK Royal Society following its review of geoengineering – deliberate intervention in the Earth’s climate system. He will explore the climate effects, costs, risks and research and governance needs for various geoengineering approaches.
Professor Shepherd is a Professorial Research Fellow in Earth System Science at the University of Southampton, a Fellow of the Royal Society and a former Deputy Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.
This lecture, as part of the University of Winchester’s Enterprise Lecture Series, has been organised in partnership with Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC), a charity founded in 2007 with the aim of transforming the city into a low carbon district.
“Some people have suggested that we could deal with climate change by clever technical interventions, such as capturing greenhouse gases from the air and storing them underground or putting mirrors in space to reflect some of the sun's rays,” said Christine Holloway, Director of WinACC. “Winchester Action on Climate Change has invited Professor Shepherd to give us the latest news about the solutions that sound a little like science fiction.”
The Enterprise Lecture, Engineering the climate: is it the answer?, will take place at Winchester Business School, University of Winchester, West Downs, Romsey Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 5HT at
6.30pm (for 7pm start) on Wednesday 18 September. To book a place email
