'How can we build the sustainable economy?' with Dieter Helm & Dimitri Zenghelis

2nd Nov 2023 17:00 – 18:15

Professor Sir Dieter Helm, Professor of Economic Policy, University of Oxford & Dr Dimitri Zenghelis, Visiting Senior Fellow, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change

What would the sustainable economy look like? What would it take to live within our environmental means? These are questions posed by Professor Sir Dieter Helm, in a forthcoming book: Legacy: How to Build the Sustainable Economy. It explores the key features of properly maintaining different types of capital (human-derived and natural), why polluters should pay, and why the current generation should fund the necessary maintenance of our natural assets. This book explains the steps that are needed to make our economies truly sustainable and highlights the feebleness of current approaches to net zero and biodiversity loss and why we are not meeting our duties to future generations. Professor Helm, will debate the challenges ahead with Dr Dimitri Zenghelis, Senior Visiting Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change, LSE, and Advisor to the Bennett Institute for Public Policy, University of Cambridge, in a discussion chaired by the Oxford Martin School Director, Professor Sir Charles Godfray.
