“Facing the Future: Education for Sustainability in Higher Education”

25th Jun 2013 12:00 – 16:00

WORKSHOP: Tuesday 25th June 12.00-4.00, FW015 A&B, Fullwood House, Park Campus, Cheltenham

Q: would you like to find out more about the University’s current approaches and initiatives in Education for Sustainability?
Q: are you interested in how Education for Sustainability can connect with the emerging learning landscape in HE?
Q: would you like to learn about how colleagues see the relevance of Education for Sustainability to their subject areas?
Q: are you interested in engaging in discussion of challenges and horizons for Education for Sustainability in future HE?

This event explores ways of reframing the curriculum and education, informed by the experiences of recent curriculum and learning projects funded through an internal awards scheme at the University of Gloucestershire. The event will share findings form the projects and provide opportunities for discussion about the potential of EfS and its role within the future HE landscape.

This type of initiative is both timely and important, as the HEA and HEFCE continue their commitments to learning for sustainability as a priority for HE and the curriculum, and QAA are now developing national guidance in ESD. The University of Gloucestershire has a longstanding commitment to EfS and is exploring ways to extend innovation in this complex and fast-moving area and to carve new pathways in EfS. These exciting projects are developing programme-wide approaches in subjects such as Education, Tourism and Business, and considering EfS in relation to lifelong learning, educator competencies, student responses, industry settings and professional perspectives.

Interactive sessions will be facilitated by Ann Finlayson, Director of SEEd and former Commissioner for Education and Capability Building for the Sustainable Development Commission, whose expertise spans 30 years of teaching and consultancy in learning for sustainability across formal and non-formal education.

Ann Finlayson
Ann has worked in the environmental field for nearly 30 years and was Commissioner for Education and Capability Building for the UK Government’s Sustainable Development Commission. After working as a countryside ranger in Scotland, she began travelling the world teaching, facilitating and consulting in places such as Papua New Guinea, Australia and Canada. Ann has a working knowledge of formal, informal and non-formal education. She is passionate about the role of learning in sustainability and for it to be about real people, real opportunities and real responsibilities.
