‘Localism, budget cuts and new jobs, how come? It’s a green resource efficient revolution of course!’

Peter Head OBE FREng FRSA – Director of ARUP will outline cost effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy, water, waste and food production efficiency through a radical programme of retrofitting and regenerating towns and rural communities across the UK.

He will talk about how this £500bn business opportunity can be optimised through the development of new partnership models and new management skills. Peter will demonstrate how education and health services can be improved despite reduced budgets, and he will show how communities can be empowered to improve their quality of life.

The role of the arts and culture are central to Peter’s plan for a radical change in society that opens the door to the ‘Ecological age’. Peter argues that these proposals can be financed by companies and NGOs and executed by local communities in partnership with local authorities and experts in finance, technology and business innovation.

Peter is a world leader in sustainable development in cities. He is strategic adviser to the Chair of the C40 Large Cities and Climate Leadership Group and the Clinton Carbon Positive Programme. Peter has won many awards for his work including the Award of Merit of IABSE, the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Silver Medal, the Prince Philip Award for Polymers in the Service of Mankind and in 2008n he was awarded the Sir Frank Whittle Medal by the Royal Academy.

Peter is Chair of the Board of the Institute for Sustainability in Thames Gateway and he received an OBE for successfully delivering the Second Severn Crossing as Government Agent. In October 2008 Peter was appointed as Innovation Champion for Thames Gateway. Peter was 2008 Principal Voice on CNN and he was nominated as one of the 30 global eco-heroes in the October 2008 issue of Time magazine. He is project director for the planning and development of the Dongtan Eco-city demonstrator on Chongming Island in Shanghai, and the Wanzhuang Eco-City in LangFang near Beijing.

Peter joined Arup in 2004 to create and lead their planning and integrated urbanism team and now heads this team globally. He was appointed in 2002 by the Mayor of London as an independent Commissioner on the London Sustainable Development Commission and leads the planning and development sub-group of the Commission. He is the RAEng judge for the Prince Philip Designers’ Prize.
