The Government has long been an advocate of shared services since the NHS/Xansa partnership was established in 2005. David Willetts, in his speech to the Universities UK Conference in September this year commented that “Too many universities try to do too much in-house”. The higher education sector has been slow in identifying new opportunities for sharing. So, what are the barriers to shared services in the sector? Does the prospect of increased competition deter universities and colleges from sharing? Or will the economic difficulties drive institutions to share anyway? Are the costs of establishing shared services too prohibitive? Is the return on investment too long? Will the Universities Modernisation Fund lead to a new wave of shared services being developed?

This one day seminar is intended to hear the latest thinking on shared services from HEFCE, to identify the barriers to shared services and mechanisms to overcome them and to hear of examples of successful shared services in other sectors.
