Reacting to Climate Change

21st Apr 2009 00:00

'Reacting to Climate Change' together with Association of Sustainability Practitioners (ASP)
21st April 1.30pm - 5.30pm, University of Westminster, London
Board room 309 Regent street W1B 2UW

"Climate change is becoming one of the most critical elements in corporate strategy. Failure to act in advance of the growing threats to commercial success is increasingly seen by shareholders and others as highly irresponsible. The consequences are likely to be serious not only for the environment as a whole but also for profits, shareholder value, competitiveness, indeed for most areas of corporate performance."
- David Ballard, Director, Alexander Ballard Ltd.

How adequate are companies’ and local and central government’s strategies for responding to climate change?

Failure to foresee and plan adequately for climate change – both for its impacts and for the need to align with necessary mitigation policies – could ruin companies and be devastating for local communities. Almost every aspect of the commercial success and the social impact of an organisation is at risk and yet most organisations' responses are not adequate.
New government initiatives are beginning to require higher levels of response and there are signs that the finance sector might not be far behind when investing capital in projects or organisations.
o What characterises good, what is exceptional, performance?
o What conditions have to be observed to make transformative breakthroughs more likely to succeed?
o What practical steps can be taken now to unblock faster change later?
ASP Learning Events collaborates with Alexander Ballard Ltd in a half day workshop to highlight the ground-breaking methodology they have developed to help organisations assess their exposure and respond with appropriate strategies.
This session will describe the PACT (Performance Acceleration Capacity-building Tool) framework that emerged from ABL's work with Hampshire County Council, Climate South East and other leading organisations in the ESPACE project (European Spatial Planning: Adapting to Climate Events). It will briefly describe the PACT process. We will share examples of leading edge practice. Participants will gain insights that will allow them to place what their organisations are doing in a wider context and that will help them to target and carry out effective improvement actions. Consultants will be able assess the opportunities for them use PACT in collaboration with ABL.
Contributions from:
• David Ballard, Director, Alexander Ballard Ltd.
• Doogie Black, Previously Hampshire County Council ESPACE officer, now using the PACT approach

Participants will:
• gain insight into the nature and scale of the human and strategic problems climate change presents
• gain insight into PACT and hands-on experience of the methodology
• gain an overview into their own organisation’s response
• actively participate and have an opportunity to share their own experiences and concerns
• identify intervention opportunities
• identify opportunities for collaboration

Participants will include:
Senior management from public and private sectors, climate change consultants and advisers, sustainability heads and practitioners and environmental specialists and researchers from industry and academia.
