S-Lab Conference

2nd Apr – 3rd Apr 2019 09:00 – 17:00

The S-Lab Conference at the University of Birmingham on April 2-3 has two presentations on our Sustainable Lab initiatives (with case studies of the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, Medical College, and SKA) as well as ones by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (initiated and led by a lab manager) and the University of Strathclyde (which has created a sustainable labs course/assessment as 2 of the 60 credits which Ph.D. students must achieve in order to graduate). Matt Gudorf, Energy Manager at the University of California, Irvine will also be explaining how it has achieved a 50% reduction in its lab energy, with other sessions covering minimizing lab plastics, sustainable autoclaves, LEAF - a new laboratory assessment tool; and energy-efficient ventilation. Many of the other 90+ sessions and tours such as the 17 case studies of new and refurbished buildings also have interesting sustainability features.

On April 1st in Birmingham S-Lab is also rerunning its half-day Smart Ventilation workshop which our own staff found very informative when they attended in September. This also features Matt as well as other speakers and has the objective of identifying both low-cost, and more capital-intensive, ways of improving ventilation energy efficiency. It is free for HE attendees and works especially well when both a HE person and key supplier is present.
