S-Lab Scotland Conference
23rd Aug 2013 09:30 – 16:30
An informative one-day conference sharing good practices in designing, building and operating world class laboratories to serve researchers in Scotland - to be held in the BREEAM "Excellent" Informatics Forum.
Experience of effective brief preparation, internal materials and systems selection and the standards required will all be discussed in morning plenary sessions led by Prof Jim Naismith, St Andrews University and other clients who have good experience of effective processes.
Afternoon workshops will enable smaller groups of research staff and support staff share ideas and experiences with designers and suppliers of specialist equipment and evolved design solutions which have contained costs, reduced emissions and provided delightful workspaces.
Tools which will be explored include BREEAM, Government Soft Landings and Post Occupancy Evaluation - all designed to achieve High Performance Buildings.
Systems for chemicals management, for cold storage of research materials and for equipment sharing - and techniques for improving performance while reducing risk in laboratories will be showcased.
A special focus will be on the positive experiences arising from the Scottish Funding Council - supported Laboratory Environmental Assessment framework pilot project at Edinburgh, Strathclyde, Glasgow, Napier and Aberdeen Universities. Opportunities for framing simple practical measures to make labs safe, successful and sustainable will be identified and the tools - like the NUS Green Impact Awards scheme considered.
This event - which is free to attend due to support from SFC - will bring together lab managers, principal investigators, early career researchers and specialist suppliers in this increasingly complex and potentially very expensive arena. At a time when institutions are achieving real carbon and cost savings across the general estate, laboratory running costs are soaring.
We hope to share many of the lessons emerging from the successful two-day conference on Effective Laboratories held in June at the University of Liverpool.
