Student Engagement in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

29th Feb 2012 15:43

ESD necessitates changes being made to dominant ways of both teaching and learning. Change requires activists, champions, pioneers and trailblazers to both stimulate and sustain it. Engagement with the ideas, issues and challenges posed by sustainability is a crucial first step in creating such change.

This exciting event aims to bring together:

  • Staff and students who are already active 'Change Agents' to share experience, ideas and learning

  • Those wishing to find out more about what being an agent for change actually involves! Skills workshops can support you in taking your first steps towards becoming successful agents of change in your own institution or context.

  • Staff who deliver ESD through modules or activity in the formal or informal curriculum

with: organisations who have experience in nurturing change agents, delivering innovative change programmes or engaging with students on sustainability initiatives, who will share their thoughts on supporting change and change agents in a range of contexts.

About the Day
Using a combination of skills workshops, an activity showcase, presentations and facilitated discussions, involving all participants, we will share inspiration, experiences and ideas; develop skills and consider how HE policy and practice could better engage with students on issues around ESD. Output from the event will be a report that showcases activity shared during the event in addition to suggestions or recommendations from participants about how student engagement with ESD can be further supported or promoted.

Sustainability Showcase
Often at events such as this there is a fantastic amount of expertise to be found in the delegates; this session allows delegates to share their own activity, however large or small, with the audience. Although this will only offer very short snapshots of activity it will support networking as delegates can identify individuals for further discussions throughout the day.

World Cafe
This facilitated discussion will again seek to maximise the participation of delegates by posing questions and stimulating debate and discussion that will subsequently form recommendations from the event to the policy makers.

Workshops
Each of our collaborating organisations will offer a skills workshop that is interactive and filled with tips, ideas and suggestions for promoting engagement with ESD within your own context.
