The winners were announced at a fabulous dinner and award ceremony at the prestigious Customs House in Brisbane on 27 September 2012. The evening was an extremely positive celebration for institutions undertaking sustainability and showcasing their achievements.

Now in their third year, the Awards were founded in the UK to recognise sustainability excellence and this year drew winners in 7 categories, with over 40 institutions involved. Organisers were delighted with this overwhelming response from more than 20% of the Australasian tertiary education sector.

The winning entries showcase the innovative and diverse initiatives being developed and implemented within our tertiary education institutions. The Carbon Reduction category was awarded to James Cook University for their unique Central District Cooling system, the largest thermal energy storage tank in the Southern Hemisphere. University of Technology, Sydney – Students’ Association winning the student initiatives category, for their sustainable breakfast bar and TAFE NSW Northern Sydney Institute winning the skills for sustainability category for Embedding sustainability Education into all their courses and activities.

New for this year is the inaugural International Green Gown Awards which will see the Australasian winners compete with the UK winners to claim the ‘international’ title in three categories – Continuous Improvement – Institutional Change, Social Responsibility and Student Initiatives and Campaigns. They will be announced in the UK on 5 November 2012. We wish our 3 Australasian winners the best of luck.

Commenting on the 2012 Awards, Leanne Denby – President of Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS) said

“We were again delighted and overwhelmed with the enthusiastic response from the sector. We are very excited about taking the Awards to the next level, competing with the UK for the international title – this truly allows recognition and sharing of ideas across the globe!”
