Aston University successfully achieves ISO 50001 certification

12th October 2016

Aston University successfully achieved ISO 50001 certification this summer. Alongside their ISO 14001 and EcoCampus certifications, this latest success confirms the University’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

The Energy, Environment and Sustainability team were particularly pleased to receive no nonconformities or opportunities for improvement, making all the hard work over the preceding months worthwhile.

Much like many other Universities, Aston has an ambitious carbon reduction target with a commitment to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 53% by the year 2020/21.

Implementing an energy management system has helped the team focus on projects which will result in the greatest energy savings. It also ensures systems are in place to monitor and measure the savings made from each project and keep track of progress.

Energy reduction had already been highlighted in ISO 14001 as an important objective of the University, so taking on the challenge of setting up an energy management system seemed the next logical step to take. The team hope to fully integrate the two systems ready for the audits in 2017.
