Catering waste in the further and higher education sectors

14th February 2012

WRAP (Waste Resources & Action Programme) estimates that 3.4 million tonnes of waste is produced by hotels, pubs, restaurants and quick service restaurants in the UK each year. 1.5 million tonnes of that goes to landfill, of which 600,000 tonnes is food waste. Eliminating the avoidable fraction of this food waste could save the sector over £722 million per year.

WRAP would like to work with the higher and further education catering sector to undertake some research into the environmental and financial aspects of waste. We are especially interested in working with colleges within a 20 mile radius of Ludlow, Rochester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow.
