Climate Week - EAUC Response to RBS Sponsorship

21st March 2011

With Climate Week (www.climateweek.com) only around the corner if you are planning an event or activity we wish you well with it. Do please get in touch with us afterwards with reports of your success.

You may be aware that there is a growing campaign focussing on Royal Bank of Scotland's sponsorship of the Week. Amongst others, student group People and Planet have a campaign to raise awareness of RBS financing the coal tar extraction which they see as one of the most environmentally destructive projects in the world. See https://peopleandplanet.org/navid12068.

While being completely supportive of Members and any initiative to highlight and combat climate change, the EAUC is raising its voice and questioning RBS's involvement in Climate Week. We are mindful that some of our university and college Members are planning Climate Week events and we remain supportive of this innitiative. We see this as an opportunity for RBS and Climate Week to reflect on their funding mechanisms and values.

The EAUC is inviting a dialogue about the principles and ethics of sustainability campaign funding. We will start off with re-evaluating our own.
