Embedding education for sustainable development: bookings now open

1st September 2023

Booking is now open for the ‘Embedding education for sustainable development (ESD)’ course, delivered by EAUC alongside the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). ETF is the expert body for professional development and standards in Further Education (FE) and Training in England.

Starting on 27 September, this course of six fortnightly sessions is for teachers, trainers, and tutors across the Further Education (FE) and Training sector seeking to embed sustainability into their professional practice.
This year’s ESD offer follows the success of the first iteration of this course, delivered by the ETF from November 2022 to February 2023. Last year’s series launched as the impact of climate change was becoming increasingly visible in the form of severe global weather shocks. Extreme weather events – caused and exacerbated by human-induced climate change – have further impacted lives and livelihoods around the world this year. In this context, sustainability has continued to grow as a priority for the education sector – reflected in the recent surge in available sustainability qualifications – and FE has a vital role to play in building essential green skills for a sustainable future.

The ETF worked with ESD experts across the country to develop the content for this series last year, including practitioners, members of the COP26 Education and Skills Committee, and specialist sector bodies. As such, the EAUC are pleased to delivered this year's course alongside the ETF. The course aims directly align with the second of the ETF’s Professional Standards for the sector.

Places on this course are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis. The fee for the six sessions in total is £220, or the discounted rate of £198 for members of the Society for Education and Training (SET), or for ETF corporate partners. Please book as early as possible via the ETF booking system.

Maddie Booth, National Head of Education for Sustainable Development at the ETF, said:

“The FE and training sector has a crucial role to play in contributing to the national, and global, sustainability agenda. To have the greatest impact, our ambition must be to embed education for sustainable development across curricula, with educators feeling equipped to provide high-quality, high-impact teaching about sustainable development across all subject areas.
“We are therefore excited to be offering this course again after the success of last year’s series. The course aims to fill the gap in ESD professional development, supporting educators to feel more confident in their capacity to embed sustainability into their practice, and to feel enthused about playing their part in contributing to meeting sustainability goals.”
