NUS is really excited to be appearing at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, showcasing the student movement’s dedication to food sustainability.

As more and more people lose their connection with what they eat, students across the UK are taking back control of the food system with NUS’ Student Eats campaign.

Student Eats puts growing sites at the heart of over a dozen campuses across the UK, providing low-carbon, healthy food for students and local communities, grown with organic principles.

It’s not just about going green. The plot at Chelsea Flower Show will celebrate the huge range of added benefits of student-led growing sites, ranging from enhancing academic achievement, to providing employability skills, to widening student engagement.

Student Eats projects from across the country have contributed to the show, growing plants over the last months to add to the garden.

NUS will be celebrating educational outreach into local primary schools, exotic crops and culinary diversity, and fully fledged student-run businesses which use their produce to create chutneys, jams, honeys and preserves.

All across the UK, these are the sort of activities which Student Eats projects are enabling, promoting sustainability alongside education, community and employability.

NUS vice president for society and citizenship Dom Anderson says that “NUS is putting sustainability at the heart of the student experience”.

“Our campus gardens are about so much more than just growing vegetables. They’re making new links between students and their community. They’re providing a huge range of employability skills for emerging graduates. They’re embedding sustainability into formal education. And of course, they’re working towards a fairer, more sustainable food system”

“This is core work for NUS, and we can’t wait to tell people about it at the Chelsea Flower Show”

NUS will be appearing at the Chelsea Flower Show from 20th May. For more information on Student Eats email us or click here.
