Rio+20 EAUC side event confirmed!

1st May 2012

We WILL have a voice at Rio!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been keeping you up to date with our progress with Rio+20 – more specifically, ensuring that sustainable development is on the agenda and that EAUC Members have voice. We’ve been working hard with a number of international organisations in a number of ways including encouraging institutions to sign the HEI sustainability declaration and also applying to hold a ‘side-event’ at the summit. These events are approved by the UNCSD Secretariat and take place during the summit itself and with the sheer number of global agendas, to have an the event approved would be a significant development.

Following weeks of anticipation, we’re delighted to announce that the UNCSD Secretariat has approved our side event! The event, as the title suggests (’Aiming higher, unlocking tertiary education's potential to accelerate sustainable development and the transition to a fair and green economy’), aims to emphasise the important role tertiary education plays in realising sustainable development and the transition to a green economy.

Iain Patton, EAUC CEO, comments on this fantastic development “as an EAUC Member, you’re not only represented nationally, you’re part of a strong global alliance. The approval of our side event now means that collectively, we have a formal part to play in the Rio+20 summit and a huge opportunity to influence world governments in sustainability in education.”
