UK National Commission for UNESCO Policy Brief on Education for Sustainable Development

21st March 2013

This is an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Policy Brief from the UK National Commission for UNESCO compiled by some of the UK's leading experts in the field. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) can be thought of as a process of learning how to make decisions that consider the long-term future of the economy, ecology and equity of all communities. Building the capacity for such future-oriented action is a key task of education.

Iain Patton says
"The EAUC welcomes this early insight to ESD in the 4 UK Jurisdictions. It reads like a classic school report with a peppering of progress but mostly it’s a big ‘could do better’. Scotland leads the way with a coherent approach linking policy makers and practitioners while England dwells in policy darkness. The EAUC is well aware that within its membership exists a wide range of excellent teaching and management for sustainability and we are here to nurture and disseminate that. But until the sector, particularly in England, makes a commitment to pooling resources and creating a shared strategy, we are going to be receiving disheartening reports just like this."
