Universities and colleges are increasingly seen as vital focal points to stimulate much needed growth and innovation rather than being separate and distinct from the concerns of the real world. Engagement with wider society and in particular business and industry is now often central to the activities of an institution and potentially an important revenue stream as funding cuts begin to be felt. The nature of relationships between business, industry and institutions can be an important measure of social responsibility, the extent to which all parties commit to working together in ways that also benefit wider society.
