Fiji National University (FNU), Nature Trust of Fiji and Nature Fiji have discussed a project which would see rainforest being protected in the area comprising the Garrick reserve and the adjacent forest and reservoir in the lease of FNU combined into single unit with the intention to be designated as National Park. This includes but not restricted to biodiversity conservation, recreation/eco-tourism, sustenance of the water supply and educational research. This project is still in the pipeline. The public has a great opportunity to experience and learn about the unique rainforests in Fiji. Some of the challenges that are being faced include; getting consent from various authorities such as Department of Lands, Itaukei Land Trust Board, Water Authority and the owners in the area.
