The WEEE directive came into force in January 2007 and aims to both reduce the amount of WEEE being produced and encourage everyone to reuse, recycle, and recover it.

Under the directive HE institutions are obliged to ensure waste electrical and electronic equipment is treated or exported to approved treatment facilities.

For whole appliances, the institution shall ensure that any items are collected and transported in such a way that optimises re-use and recycling.
