Storage Facilities and equipment

The type of waste you produce will influence the types of handling and storage equipment required by your organisation.

You should be aware of the potential weights that staff may have to carry, for example, when emptying recycling bins or small containers at end for general waste. Manual handling injuries can result when individuals attempt to move or lift heavy objects or when they move light objects on a repeated basis. When planning the movement of waste within your organisation you should take account of the risks associated with manual handling, where appropriate carry out and record a risks assessment and take steps to control the risks so as to comply with the Health and Safety (Manual Handling Operations) Regulations 1992 as amended.

Further information on complying with these Regulations can be found at www.hse.gov.uk/msd/index.htm
